When a portion of the mandible has been removed due to surgery, trauma or accident, a hemi-mandibular prosthesis is fabricated to restore the continuity of the mandible and allow for chewing and eating. This prosthesis also helps with the facial esthetics and reduces any complicating TMJ symptoms. Typically, dental implants are placed in the replaced or reduced bone and a metal framework is placed on top of the implants with teeth thereby allowing the patient to eat, chew and speak normally. Dr. Horkowitz and her staff custom fabricate maxillofacial prostheses and work with our patients to help regain the ability to eat, chew, swallow and speak normally. We are compassionate, empathetic clinicians who work with you to minimize the discomforts of your condition and strive to achieve optimal esthetics, function and comfort in all our patients.
